The Issue
Since the pandemic court back logs have increased by over 48% to over 60,000 cases by June 21. Tackling the backlog is one of the most fundamental challenges of the justice system over the next 5 years.
As a result more people are being sent to prison pretrial. Pretrial detention is currently costing the economy approx. £7bn per year.
A large proportion of these cases get acquitted or dropped due to lack of evidence/evidence disclosure issues.
